Sudan

BACKGROUND

Working with Jewish and non Jewish organisations, the JCC has, for the past two years, been active in involving the Jewish community in campaigning to end the genocide in Darfur. We are now working with a coalition of NGOs to campaign to protect peace in the entirety of Sudan.

TAKE ACTION

In South Sudan, 2009 was the most violent year since the peace agreement was signed, with over 2,500 killed and 350,000 displaced in southern Sudan. In the western region of Darfur, seven years after the conflict erupted millions continue to suffer daily in camps. On 9 January, activists all over the world joined together – from Nairobi to New York; Cairo to London – to call for urgent, high-level international coordination on Sudan. Here in the UK, hundreds of Sudanese people and supporters gathered outside 10 Downing Street to ask the British government to take urgent action to prevent further violence in Sudan.

You can support their efforts by writing to your MP, urging him or her to write to the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary to ask them to prioritise Sudan in 2010: www.sudanletterwritingcampaign.org
